Overnight layover in Dusseldorf - Where to go/ how to get there?

We arrive in Dusseldorf airport around 3pm and leave the next day at 2pm. Where should we stay overnight? How do we get to "old town" to eat/see some sights? Any "must see" things we should do in this partial day we have in Dusseldorf?

Even though my daughter has taken us to Dusseldorf, I'm uncertain if old town is one and the same as that part which is near the waterfront, which to me is quaint, modern, and the place where most young people go. The architecture is very interesting especially in the evening lights. She resides in Neuss, which has an indoor ski resort similar to Dubai, might be of interest to you. We plan to be there from Sept. 13th thru end of month, she's expecting our first grandson!!

Even though she will pick us up at airport, I've looked at possibilities of doing a few trips from that airport. I believe Dusseldorf proper is only 1 or 2 miles away, possibly shorter. Just started my search this morning, appears trains(trams??) and taxi could take you there. When we Googled the question, taxi was $33 euro one way to Neuss,a little pricy, maybe I'll be more appreciative next time Son-in-law picks us up!!

Kim, You can get to "old town" (Altstadt) from the train station (Hauptbahnhof) by taking the U-Bahn (subway). I believe the station to get off for die Altstadt is Heinrich Heine. Inquire at the train station. Depending on where you headed next after Düsseldorf, I would suggest staying in the area of the Hauptbahnhof...on Bismarckstraße 97 the Hotel Bismarck, just a few mins walk from the train station. The phone # is 011-49-211-1609860....haven't stayed myself but have checked out the place.

I booked a hotel at the 4 points Sheraton which seems to be pretty central to everything.. Going to walk to Alstadt at night for the bars, and then Karlstadt in the morning for the shopping/river view before heading back to the airport.

Also remember Cologne is only 40 minutes away by local train.
