Our Trip to Europe

My husband and I just got back from an 18 day trip to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. I thought I would share some information that you may find helpful. Just to give you some background, we stayed in Innsbruck, Austria, Munich, Rothenburg and Baden-Baden, Germany, Lucerne, Switzerland, Bellagio, San Gimignano & Rome, Italy. We also drove through but did not stay in Heidelburg, Pisa and Rhine Falls. If you have any questions about any of those places, feel free to ask.

The Autobahn is no longer an open road. Most of it is packed with traffic.

Neuschwanstein – Make reservations online ahead of time. Having reservations saved us from standing in a very long line

Ettal Basilica – Between Oberommergau and Munich in Germany, we just happened to drive through the little town of Ettal and found a huge beautiful basilica. It is well worth the stop.

Andechs Monastery just south of Munich is well worth the excursion. Great beer, food and dessert! Order the Bavarian Dampfnudel for dessert. It is a sweet yeast roll covered in vanilla cream. YUM!

Augustine Keller Beergarden in Munich – Awesome beergarden but the must see is the cellar restaurant downstairs. Don’t miss it.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany – By far my favorite town that we visited in Germany. This small town is what Germany used to be. Now so many of the towns are huge, overpopulated and very Americanized. You have to do the Night Watchman Tour. He has the best sense of humor!

Suzi, sounds like you had a great trip and very similar to the trip I am planning for next year. I will replace Italy with the Normandy area of France and then Germany, Austria, Switzerland. My trip will also be 18 days. How did that work for you? Were you rushed or did you have ample time in each place? I will start with Normandy and then Frankfurt, Rotenburg, Bacharach, Baden Baden, Munich, Murren, Salzburg, Hallstadt and Vienna. Also want to visit Leipheim, A very small town close to Ulm where I lived for 2 years as a child. I hope 18 days is enough time but all the time I have. Also, how did you find the prices? Did you have a budget? I will probably be travelling alone which is more expensive for rooms. Sounds like you did a Rick Steve's tour on your own.

18 days is just about perfect. We stayed in each place 1-3 nights. My favorite by far was Rothenburg. It is such a cute little town. I really wish more of Germany had been like Rothenburg. Munich too me was way too overcrowded and the only place I really held my purse a little closer. We booked it all through a travel agent and I told her I wanted to keep the rooms about $200 a night.

Hotel info:

In Munich we stayed at Flemings City Hotel on Bayerstrasse. It was very nice and right across the street from the train station if you will be using the train. It is also a very easy walk to the Glockenspiel.

In Rothenburg we stayed at Romantik Hotel Markusturm on Rodergasse. I love this hotel! Perfect location and just as cute as it can be! If I had to do it over again, I would stay here 2 nights instead of one.

In Baden-Baden we stayed at Rathaus Gloeckel on Steinstr. It is located right by the Roman-Irish Bath. Good location. We had scheduled to stay here 2 nights but checked out after one. Really after you do the bath and casino there is not a whole lot left to do unless you like expensive shopping.

I hope some of that info helps. Please let me know if you have more questions.

Hi Suzi, I am so glad you did your trip in 18 days, so many people have said we don't have enough time for our trip. Hubby and I have 17 days to scoot around in a motorhome, could you offer advice on our "loose" itinerary?

  • We fly in and out of Frankfurt.
  • We have the first 2.5 days in Frankfurt without transportation as we wait to pickup our motorhome.
  • Our trip is mid September to early October.
  • Countries to visit: Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland.
  • We've got a few places in mind to visit....Bruges, Mont St Michel, French coast, Switzerland. We like castles (not too many!), wine regions, cute little towns, beautiful architecture, markets, festivals, etc. Not keen on museums or boring history stuff. Sorry, not for me. Any fabulous suggestions?

Day 1 Frankfurt - probably stay in Mainz? (cant pickup motorhome til 3rd day)
Day 2 Mainz/Frankfurt
Day 3 Pickup motorhome, drive to Luxemburg
Day 4 Bruges, drive to Paris?
Day 5 Paris
Day 6 Mont St Michel
Day 7 Loire Valley
Day 8 Dijon
Day 9 Apt (stay with relatives)
Day 10 Monaco
Day 11 Milan/Switzerland
Day 12 Switzerland
Day 13 Switzerland
Day 14 Freiburg
Day 15 Heidelberg
Day 16 Frankfurt, drop off motorhome, check into hotel (not booked yet)
Day 17 This is German National Holiday on 3 October. We fly home late at night. No transportation. We'll be checking out of hotel in mid-morning. What can we do all day? Are taxis to airport easy to get on a holiday?

I know this looks very packed but thats the sort of circle we'll probably drive, not definately stay in each place but something like that.

HELP! Does that sound reasonable?
Thanks so much in advance

I would definitely recommend Neuschwanstein if you want to see the most famous castle of them all. Rothenburg ob der Tauber was by far my favorite German town. If you are in that direction, you need to stop there even if it's only for a couple of hours just to walk around. Just be aware that the autobahn is not open road. There is a lot of traffic. Besides that all the traveling did not bother us. We got to see so much more by moving around as much as we did!
