Our time in Vienna -

Hello, All. Here is our proposed itinerary for two days in Vienna. I was wondering what you all think. Suggestions appreciated!

Day 1 (Saturday) - Arrive early and check bags, do a self guided walking tour of the Ring, Opera House tour, Cathedral Tour, Dinner, Opera (Wagner that night!)
Day 2 (Sunday) - Mass in the palace with the Boys Choir, see a museum or tour the palace, perhaps afternoon picnic in the Wiener Wald (or the Zentral Friedhoff), and back in town for the dinner/Lipizzaner stallion show.
What do you think?

Does anyone think the Mass at Stephansdom would be a better experience? (I was not impressed with the Boy's Choir Mass, personally.)

Any other recommendations? We're more the self-guided tour types, and less the museums types.

If you are interested in seeing the Schoenbrunn palace, I personally think that the vast gardens are the best part of it, and they are free to visit. Plus you get amazing views of the place and the city stretching beyond it if you climb the hill at the back of the palace. If you want to go there, it's a quick ride on the U-bahn (subway); take the U4 line from Karlsplatz out to Schonbrunn and then walk the ten minutes from there.

Alternatively, I think that the Spanish riding school is excellent. Tickets for the guided tours can be purchased same-day, but if you want to see a show you would need to purchase in advance from http://www.srs.at/

Finally, a quick place to visit is the Votivekirch (a church built to thank God for a failed assassination attempt on the Emperor's life), which has some amazing architecture and is just off of the ring. I would go early, though, as it has some strange hours and closed early on Saturdays.

Enjoy your trip!
