Our time in Belgium

Two of us will fly into Brussels in early October for 5 for 6 days. We want to see Brussels, Antwerp, Brugge, perhaps WW I sites around Ypres, and Ghent. We are considering sleeping in Ghent and taking day trips from there. We're looking for a reasonable B&B or small hotel in Ghent. Or, would it make more sense to use a different city as our overnight location? We will use the train for transportation. Are there special rates or tickets for 65 year olds?

I would use Brugge becuz it is so beautiful.Even if you return from your excursions at dusk you will delight in strolling this medieval picturesque town.
Ghent does not have the charm like Brugge.
I hope to return some day.

No, stay in Ghent! Large parts of the inner circle of Brugge is basically a tourist fun house, but Ghent is a lively, thriving university city. Although several blocks of a fairly ordinary modern city sit between the train station and the historical core of Ghent, the inner area is wonderful. The Graslei is one of the most beautiful streets/canals in Europe, and it becomes even more wonderful at night. Sorry I don't have any lodging recommendations, though.

I don't know of any senior discounts, but on Belgian rail, you can get a pass good 10 trips anywhere within the country for about 70 euro. Two people can use the pass at the same time, so one round trip for two people would count as 4 trips against the 10.
