We are flying into Orly (from Pisa) and from there plan to travel to Bayeaux for 3 nights and then to Amboise for 3 nights. We were planning to rent a car in Bayeaux. From what I see it doesn't appear that there is easy train service between Orly and Caen/Bayeaux. Should we transfer from Orly to CDG and train in, or rent our car in Orly and just drive?
Hi Susan, The train to Normandy leaves from Gare St Lazare in Paris. I'm not sure where the train from Orly leaves you in Paris, but there should be a bus or train from the drop-off that will take you to St Lazare.
Susan, ratp.fr suggests taking the (usual) 'Orlyval' bus to the 'Antony' stop on RER B, then taking RER B to the metro station called 'Chatelet-Les Halles' (dir: 'Aeroport Charles de Gaulle 2 TGV'). From 'Chatelet-Les Halles' take the #14 metro line to metro stop 'Saint-Lazare' (dir: 'Saint-Lazare'). From here you actually have to walk a bit to the Gare, like across the street. It should take around 1 hour. Any good guidebook (and the internet!) will explain 'Orlyval' and how it works. I was going to suggest that particular route myself, but 'Chatelet-Les Halles' is a very large transfer ("correspondance") station, but if ratp.fr says it's the best one, ...Allow plenty of time to purchase tickets for Orlyval, RER, and for purchasing/retrieving train tickets at Gare Saint-Lazare - an hour or two at least. Any extra time can be spent gawking at Paris!!!
For the sake of clarity, the OrlyVal is a driverless shuttle train, not a bus, and Chatelet-Les Halles is a RER station, not a metro station. Take the OrlyVal to the Antony RER station. Take the RER B to Chatelet-Les Halles. Walk through the connecting tunnels to the Chatelet metro station. Take metro line 14 to Saint-Lazare. The trip will take 40-45 minutes and the combined fare is €10.25. An alternate route that is a little slower but cheaper would be to take the airport shuttle bus to the Pont de Rungis RER station, the RER C to Bibliotheque Francois Mitterand, and metro line 14 to Saint-Lazare. The fare for the shuttle bus is €2.50. The fare for the RER & metro ride is €3.80.
