Orange, Avignon, Vaison la Romaine: Where to stay??

We will be staying in the Rhone area for 4 nights and wish to focus our time at Orange, Avignon, and the wine country of Chateauneuf du Pape, Tavel, and Gigondas. Where would be the best home base? We will have a car and are leaning toward Vaison la Romaine. We would appreciate any hotel recommendations.

Good choice!!! In that area, while I have not been to Orange, Vaison la Romaine is wonderful. I would choose the medieval section. Further south, I like Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and many love St. Remy. But for the Cote du Rhone area, you have made an excellent choice.

I agree with David and add the perspective that Orange will take half a day (plus a meal) and it's a bit at the far end of the stick to serve as a base. Also, that Chateauneuf needs but a couple of hours (but wine bores me to tears).

I love Vaison la Romaine and recommend Hotel Le Beffroi. I've stayed there twice and loved it both times. Also recommend visiting Chateau Mourchon outside Seguret.

I agree that Vaison is the best choice between the ones you mention.

My wife and I visited Vaison la Romaine and highly recommend a stay at L'Eveche (http://eveche.free.fr/uk_index.htm). It is a very nice B & B in the medieval section. Also check out Rick Steve's recommended drive thru the nearby villages and countryside.

I second L'Eveche in Vaison la Romaine. It is a wonderful place to stay with fabulous hosts and amazing views of the surrounding area. We stayed there for 4 nights and drove around the region to the various wineries, sights, etc. It was a great, central location to stay.
