I will be in Zurich and have about 48 hours of "free time" before I need to be in Lyon. Any suggestions on how best to spend the time? I have been advised to see the open air museum Ballenberg... I have not yet purchased a rail pass and may just buy tickets as I go.

Will take about 3 hrs to get to Ballenberg museum. I'd suggest going to Lucerne.... it's much closer, has great scenery, and lots of things to do.

Agree that Lucerne would be a good choice, very nice city. Zurich is not bad, I like it a lot, but Lucerne is better. Also check out the train schedule and see if Bern would work; another nice little Swiss city.
