I'll be spending a week in Nuremberg in about a fortnight's time. At the moment my main targets to visit are: Germanisches Museum: don't know if that'll take a full day or less depending on how much I find that interests me. Deutsche Bahn Museum Nazi DokuZentrum and Trial Courthouse: are these about a half day each, more or less and would it be too traumatic/depressing to see them both in one day? Day trip to Noerdlingen to see the railway museum there and the old town.
Only fixed thing so far is that I'll be going to Bamberg on the Tuesday to see a friend of mine who lives there. Any other things worthwhile? Is it worth making a special trip to Rothenberg if I'm already seeing the old town at Noerdlinger? I'll be using public transport exclusively, don't want to hire a car. I'd also be interested in any suggestions for food in Nuremberg.
I would not discount a trip to Rothenburg, it's only an hour 10 minutes away on the train.
In Noerdlingen, take note of the stone that used to build the St Georg's church. It contains "shocked" quartz which gave evidence that Noerdlingen sits in an ancient asteroid impact crater. I believe there is a Ries Crater museum in town.
"Any other things worthwhile?" Oh, yeah. I like Nuremberg. But with a week I'd want to make another excursion or two besides Nördlingen (which is a handsome town but also a full 2 hours away by train.) I've just spent a few days in the area myself seeing some lesser-known spots that you might appreciate as well. Handsome AMBERG is less than an hour from Nuremberg Hbf by direct train. BAYREUTH can be reached in just a tad over one hour by direct train. I enjoyed the Maisel's Brewery tour there too. IPHOFEN is an impossibly picturesque old town 45 minutes away by direct train. Bad Windsheim's "Fränkisches Freilandmuseum" has a stunning collection of buildings from the last 6 centuries that have been dismantled from various regions of Franconia and reassembled here. WOW. BW is only 45-50 minutes away from Nuremberg Hbf (one change of train.)
Philip: are you informed about the VGN TagesTicket Plus? It's a great way to use the train system from Nuremberg - 16.80€/day gets you (and one adult companion if you have one) a daypass available from ticket machines that covers the whole region nicely. It won't get you to Nördlingen, but it will work for the destinations I've suggested and for Rothenburg as well. (Use the Bayern Ticket for Nördlingen.) Buy one on Saturday, and it's valid on Sunday too. Other details are HERE:

Thanks for the town suggestions, I'll look into them. I'll need a weekly pass as the place I'm staying is a bit out of the centre, but I'll check the VGN+.
"I'll need a weekly pass as the place I'm staying is a bit out of the centre, but I'll check the VGN+." The Tagesticket plus covers your local transportation as well as your outing on any day you use it. For the days you are not making an outing, look into the 5- or 10-trip cards you can buy for whatever price-level your inner-city trip entails. There is also the Mobi-ticket for one week - but it wouldn't be needed on those days when you leave town on a Tagesticket plus.
