One night in Paris- suggestions

I will be spending one night in Paris at the end of September. Having never been to Paris, I have no idea what part of the city to stay in. Our plan is to catch a bus and/or river tour and hopefully see the top tourist sites. Does anyone have a suggestion on the part of the city to try to find a hotel in, or even a suggest a particular hotel (clean, safe and close to public transportation)on a budget? Your comments are appreciated. Thanks!

Tim....maybe give us the number of hours you'll be in Paris....when you arrive, and what hour your flight leaves. That may give people a better idea as to what to suggest. For example, if you're heading home early the next morning from CDG (say 9 am or earlier), I would personally suggest staying at one of the low-cost Ibis or Etap hotels at CDG Roissy 2 (see Tim's and others' posts just below) so as not to miss the flight. The RER from downtown Paris to CDG (where a shuttle will take you to the hotel) runs 'til about midnight...around 11:30 pm on Sundays...run takes between half an hour and 45 minutes. If you take a late run, contact the hotel to see when their last shuttle run is.

Norm, thanks for the reply. We are arriving at 6:30am on a Sunday morning, and fly out Monday evening at 6:30pm- both from CDG. So we basically have all day Sunday and a half day on Monday. Since we will have already been traveling for 10 days, we are planning to leave our baggage with the service at the airport and only carry a backpack while in the city.

Thanks again!

If you get a hotel in the 6th arrondisment and buy a two day Batobus ticket (it's a hop-on hop-off boat that plods up and down the Seine) you can see most of the main tourist sites (except Montmartre) of Paris in your 36 hours. How many you can visit depends on how much time you want to spend at each site. We had good luck in June going to Notre Dame at 9:30 A.M. (for the trip up to the towers) and visiting the Eiffel Tower about 5:00 in the afternoon (lines were short at that time. Of course I don't know if those times are always good, but they were for us. Some sites are closed Monday and Tuesday, if those are your days, plan accordingly. A quick over-view will give you an idea of what you would like to enjoy in more depth the next time you visit. Enjoy. We can't wait for our next visit!
