my son and I are driving from Venice to Munich. Is a good one night stop perhaps Ruette, or Garmisch or something else? Thanks
Hi Kathleen,
What time of year?
What type of place (experience) are you looking for? A city, village in the Alps, scenery...
If you are looking for amazing scenery, I'd suggest a drive through the Dolomites and staying in Alta Badia or the Val Gardena. You'd drive from Venice to Cortina d'Ampezzo and head west via the Falzarego Pass into Alta Badia and over the Gardena Pass into Val Gardena. Both are beautiful valleys with amazing Dolomite scenery and are about 4 hours from Venice and 4 hours from Munich.

In the Val Gardena the town of Ortisei is the only town which has an "old town" pedestrin zone. We can highly recommend a stay at either:
Other options I'd suggest are driving to Lienz, Austria to Heiligenblut (overnight), drive the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse to Zell am See and on to Munich.
We loved our stay at:

If "mountain" driving isn't "your thing", I'd suggest an overnight in either one of these very charming old towns mid way on your drive...Brixen/Bressanone (Italy), about an hour from Innsbruck or Sterzing/Vipiteno (Italy), about 45 minutes from Innsbruck
If you're looking to stay closer to Munich, I'd then suggest staying in Mittenwald, Germany, which is 20 minutes or so south of Garmisch. We also love staying in Hall in Tirol, which is just 15 minutes from Innsbruck.
Our favorite places to stay in these two areas:
Hope this helps.
