I'm going to a business conference in Vienna in July and am planning to take the train to Munich for a few days afterward and fly home from there. Until I started researching this trip I didn't know much about Salzburg but it looks like a beautiful and interesting city worth a visit. I really could only squeeze in one day there so here's my question: Is a one-day stop in Salzburg worthwhile or would I better off saving it for another time and spending all my time in Munich and environs. Thanks.
Are you saying you want to leave Vienna in the morning, stop in Salzburg then on to Munich for the night? If so, I'm not sure it's worth it. If I had to choose between spending time in Salzburg or Munich I would definately choose Salzburg. You could see most of Salzburg in a day, but you would get so much more out of it if you took the time to stay the night - catch a concert, soak up the charm.
I would likely leave Vienna as early in the AM as possible, then stay overnight in Salzburg, leaving sometime the following day.
I'd like to spend three days in/near Munich -- two in the city, one to go to Neuschwanstein.
Having lived in Salzburg I might be a little biased, but I'd choose two days in Salzburg and two days in Munich. If the weather is good, you would enjoy the view at Neuschwanstein, but I wouldn't go just to see the castle.
Fair enough. Neuschwanstein is just one of those things I've always wanted to see, not sure why.
Thanks to all.
I was in this area on a quick trip last week. Spent
one day in Salzburg which was fantastic but not
enough time. I wish I had had at least another day and night there.
For a good time click on it. Gute Reise! P
We spent 2 nights in Salzburg which left one full to tour. You can see a lot and it's worth at least that amount of time. We did the same with Munich. It's worth spending at least one full day in each of those cities - try to do at least two in each. You could take one day off of one of them - to go to Neuchweinstein.
Hi Warren
My husband and I went to Germany in August 2006 for out honeymoon and one of our stops was Neuschwanstein Castle, we stayed in Hohenschwangau. We enjoyed the fact that all the tourists left with the buses and then the town was quiet. I wouldn't say that it is necessary to stay in town though. I would definitely recommend following Rick Steves' instructions and reserving your tickets ahead of time for the castle. You can do it on line and it will save you a lot of time. I think a stop to see the castle is worth it, the views are amazing, be sure to walk along the trails once you're up there and you'll get some amazing views looking back at the castle.
We also spent several days in Munich and enjoyed them all! Our trip this summer will include Salzburg so I can't really give an opinion as to whether you should choose one city over the other.
Have a great trip!
Salzburg is definitely worth a one-day stopoff. Do Rick's "Old Town" and "Across the River" walks, and tour the Festung (Fortress). Have dinner at Stiftskeller St. Peter, originally established in A.D.803, and visited by Charlemagne. Have a delicious beer (or several) at the Augustiner Braustubel Monastery (Mullers). Stroll back along the river in the moonlight. Delightful.
