One Day in Munich

I will have one day in Munich this summer (after a week in Bayreuth). I am 55, will be staying at an airport hotel, don't want to do a lot of walking, but would appreciate seeing 2-3 don't miss highlights. Thanks, John

Yeah, that might be the name of it. Has he been there?--don't know. He certainly seems knowledgeable about Germany.

Easy! Take the S-Bahn to Marienplatz and bingo - you're right in the heart of the must-see places. About 45 minutes from the airport.

You will be right at the Rathaus (town hall) with the Glockenspiel, the Frauenkirche cathedral, the Viktualienmarkt (outside farmers' market0, fairly close (10 minute walk)to the Hofbräuhaus beer hall, and about a ten minute walk to the Theatinerkirche and Feldherrnhalle.

I agree, Marienplatz has most of the sites. Other options are Alte Pinokotech (the classic art gallery) or English Gardens which is a great place to relax when the weather is good.

John, as the others have noted, this is really easy. A train goes from the airport into the main train terminal in Munich (but it's not a Die Bahn train, so look for the Munich public transportation trains). The main train terminal in Munich is only a few blocks from everything you'd want to see unless you want to see the beer garden open air places. That's in a slightly different part of the main area of downtown.

If you're a chocoholic or looking for a great place to buy wonderful chocolate gifts for people then by all means make sure you go to Dallmayr Chocolatier. Click on this link, then select English in the upper right of the page, unless you're fluent in German.

Of course you don't have to stay at an airport hotel because the train goes directly into the airport. A hotel on the Marienplatz would put you right at the S-Bahn entrance and it goes from there to the train station to the airport. A hotel around the Marienplatz would also put you right smack dab in the center of all the stuff to see.

Thanks Tim--I will be coming into Munich by train from Bayreuth w 1 suitcase and carryon. I want to lug that stuff as little as possible. My trav agent suggested an airport hotel so i can drop everything off at the hotel and then take the local train to/from Marienplatz etc w/o all that stuff. John
