One day in between Munich and Brussels

My college roommates and I will be traveling from Munich to Brussels and looking for a good midway point to stop and explore for the day and stay the night. I've looked into the Rhine River boat tour Rick talks about and possibly staying in a castle-turned-hostel in St. Goar. Another possibility is going and spending the day/night in Koln. Which would you recommend? I'd love to hear any other suggestions too!

I'm not a city person so I would not make a deliberate choice to stay in a city just to see it. Bacharach seems a little closer to Brussels than to Munich but that might give you the opportunity to spend just a couple of hours there on your way to Brussels. I might prefer the No. Black Forest, but it's a little closer to Munich. The Rhein boat tour to which you refer is at www.k-d.de. The castle-turned-hostel is a castle-turned-ruins, then rebuilt to look like a castle-hostel. It's called Stahleck and is in Bacharach. There is also a built to look like a castle-hotel next to the ruins of Rheinfels castle in St. Goar.

Mark, If you want to stay in a "castle-turned-hostel", then Burg Stahleck in Bacharach as mentioned by Lee would be a great choice! It's located on the hill above town and while you could hike up there from the station, using a Taxi would be my choice. Bacharach is a smaller town, so it's likely you would need to pre-arrange a Taxi. Burg Stahleck is an HI Hostel so having an (inexpensive) membership may be required, and will probably provide a discount. There's a really nice Cafeteria downstairs from the main desk, and they offer Beer as well (sitting on the patio with a "cool one" looking over the Rhine is a nice way to spend some time). However, one caveat to mention - Burg Stahleck is not a party Hostel and often has school groups staying there. If you can tolerate that, it's a good choice for lodgings. One other point to mention if you decide to stay in Bacharach. There's an Irish Pub in town, and the owners are really nice (they speak English)! As I recall, they have Guinness on-tap. Happy travels!

That sounds great Ken, we're definitely not looking for a party hostel to stay in so that sounds like a perfect way to spend an evening. I think we'll do Bacharach. Thanks!
