We want to spend one day in Bern.We are mainly interested in the areas along the Aare and perhaps the Botanical Gardens. We don't want museums or bear pits.Does anyone have any suggestions for walks and/or cafes along the river? Or any other must sees ??
Hey ! Doesn't anyone have advice on Bern??
Well, we spent a great day in Bern but it seems we did exactly what you don't want to do ... didn't sie the Botanical Garden nor the river.
However, we really enjoyed walking through the historic city centre with its dozens of beautiful fountains. Also right in the middle of the historic centre is the Einstein house. We thought it was quite interesting to see. Put some of our preconceptions into a different light (and my husband is a scientist and was surprised himself!).
We also went to the Historisches Museum that includes an Einstein exhibit as well. At the time is was a special exhibit but it's been so successful that it became part of the permanent displays. For me this musuem was quite an eyeopener in that I had THE aha moment understanding Swiss history and how it's so different from the history of other European countries. I had no idea - and I did grow up in Europe taking honours classes in history during my high school years ...
Hi Dianne,
I would say not to miss Bern, my favorite city in Switzerland! Actually we were there on a Sunday. We stayed in Basel and took day trips to Zurich, Lucerne and Basel. Everything in Bern was closed. But
I so enjoyed just walking around because it has such
beautiful scenery, especially along the river. I would love to return some day soon and really explore the sights!
Happy Travels!
Thanks Beatrix for the tip on the Einstein exhibit. It does sound interesting and as I am only 66 years old, I am not too old to learn something new. And Debi, we went to Thun on a Sunday and sure enough, everything was closed... certainly not like it is here in the States. Luckily you are able to enjoy the beautiful Aare on any day. I'll let you know what we discovered about Bern when we come back in September. (We are going on a Tuesday !)
