Hi all,
We arrive at the Berlin Hbf by train from Amsterdam at around 7:30pm on a Thursday this coming July. The next day our daughter, who will have just completed a 3-week exchange trip, will show us a few highlights of her stay. Then we will leave from Tegel airport at approx. 10am on Saturday. I'd love suggestions on where to stay - we will want easy access via public transportation after our 6+ hour train ride from Amsterdam, and then again to the Tegel airport early in the morning on Saturday. It seems that there is an express bus route to Tegel via the Zoo station? Any help is much appreciated! - Corinna
The express bus to an dfrom Tegal also stops at Alexanderplatz, and runs right down Unter den Linden, stopping where it crosses Friedrichstrasse. We are doing the opposite of you-arriving by plane and departing by train-and I liked the Friedrichstrasse area for location and convenience. This is in Mitte, about halfway between the Reichstag and Museum Insel, walking distance from either one, and well-served by S-Bahn at the Friedrichstrasse station. There are several hotels along the street, including two right on the river, on either side.
Hi, You're arriving at Hbf. and want to go to Bahnhof Zoo and the next day go from Bahnhof Zoo to Tegel? At Berlin Hbf where you come in from Amsterdam, take the S-Bahn (Gleis 17 or 18) going west, any of them with Potsdam as the terminus. They all stop at Zoo. Yes, as pointed out above there is an express bus going from Bahnhof Zoo to Tegel...Bus X9. (It's been ages since I took the X9) This way you need not go back to Hbf. to get to Tegel. About two blocks from Bahnhof Zoo is the German chain Motel One, they are usually situated near to train/S-Bahn stations. To the right of Berlin Hbf is the Meininger Hotel, 2 mins. away, as you exit.
corinna, For a great place to stay in Berlin, I would highly recommend Pension Peters. It's in a fantastic location, about half-way between Bahnhof Zoo and Savignyplatz stations. From the Pension, it's about a 5 minute walk to Savignyplatz and about 10-12 minutes to Bahnhof Zoo. The rooms are comfortable, the staff are wonderful and it's in a nice area. It's very popular though, so I'd suggest getting a booking SOON for travel in July! It's unfortunate that you don't have more time in Berlin. It's a fantastic city with so much to see. Happy travels!
thank you fred and lola for your help! sounds like i should find a hotel near the zoo station, as i suspected.
I, too, recommend Ken's recommendation of Pension Peters having stayed there and really enjoyed everything about out stay. I will be staying there if/when we ever return to Berlin.
Thank you everyone - I have booked Pension Peters! I'm confused about whether or not our breakfast is included, (family room with 2 teenagers), but I guess we'll see when we get there.
Hi, True, it is a good location. The station Savignyplatz is served by two S-Bahn lines which go straight to Berlin Hbf (east) or westward to Berlin-Spandau and the town of Potsdam.
corinna, It's great to hear that you've now booked Pension Peters. Yes, a buffet breakfast is included (unless something has changed since my visit). If you don't mind "pub grub", walk across the street to Dicke Wirtin's. The food is great and they have Guinness on tap if you're so inclined (or German beer). There are some nice Italian restaurants close to Savignyplatz, and Schwarze's Café is a few doors from the hotel (Schwarze's is open 24-hours).
