Just the basics: One long day and evening in Amsterdam: My wife and I want to get a brief, but meaningful experiencethe more we know going in, the quicker we can get logistical issues solved and get a snapshot of the culture. There are many things I don't know, but here are my concerns: 1) If (and where) to get a luggage locker at the airport. 2) Where is the ideal place to try Dutch cooking, cheese, etc. 3) Where is the best address to get a photo of my wife in front
of the most picturesque canal/old, traditonal home neighborhood. 4) Is there an economical 24 hour pass for trams/buses?? 5) Is it a rip-off to buy a small diamond at the cutting shop?? 6) Besides Dutch, any good Asian cafe?? A Boat tour of note?? Thanks for any help you can offer!
2} have a go at Keuken van 1870. 3} Herrengracht 5} Probably - if you want good diamonds try Antwerpen 6a} How do you define Asian? Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Malay, Thai? Or Indonesian? If so, the best I have had in was in Haarlem. Would you go that far? If so, there is the number 300 special red bus which goes straight between Haarlem and the airport.
1)There are lockers at Schipol airport and Centraal Station. If you use the ones at the airport use the lockers just outside of customs, not the ones inside the terminal near the gates. 3) This bridge is a good spot to take a photo at night: http://goo.gl/maps/9rrCu 4)Unlimited transit passes can be purchased at the GVB office just outside the front of Centraal Station: http://tinyurl.com/8dnmq94 5)Indonesian food a very popular in Holland. It's not to my taste but I'm sure others can give you some recommendations.
2. de Blauwe Hollander is a decent "Dutch" restaurant with family style seating near the Leidse Plein. 5. If you're looking for diamonds, go to Antwerp. 6. You will see restaurants all over town with "Reistaffle". Indonesian cuisine and quite tasty. Hate to make a recomendation as locals will be more knowledgeable. I guess everyone has their favorites. The ones I go to, others would probably turn their noses and say touristy and over priced.
There are boat tour boardings at several points on the Singelgracht and opposite Centraal Station. Very nice, especially in the evening.
Good stuff, THANKS! Probably no such thing as Vietnamese cuisine in A-dam?? One poster wrote that ATM's are "hard to find and often empty." I suppose that to ask where I'd find a lucky ATM is tacky as asking the location of somebody's secret fishing hole. Well, suffice it to say that we're going over there without even a euro to our names! Is that gutsy or irresponsible?? Maybe a bank lobby??
...Thanking you again.
Sorry, but there is probably EVERY type of cuisine in Amsterdam. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Martian restaurant. But Indonesian is the thing.
Re ATMs - I don't understand what you've heard. This is a major city with a large population, with ATMs and banks all over. Including in Schiphol and Centraal Station. Finding an ATM linked to a bank is easy, especially if you take a moment to look up the major banks' names there. I can name "Rabobank" off the top of my head, as I've watched them sponsor a Tour de France team over the years.
I have checked the slips from the various ATMs I have used at different banks in Europe, using my CapOne ATM card via the PLUS and then CIRRUS networks. And it seems that no matter where I was I was charged about .8 of 1 percent cost for the transaction compared to that day's posted exchange rate (as in if the amount of currency I received was equal to $100, I was debited $100.80). The bank did not matter, it was the Network that converted.
I named Rabobank simply as the only Dutch bank name that came to mind.
Every once in a while in Italy I've found an ATM which wasn't happy and went to another with no particular problem. I've never had that problem in the Netherlands in many years of visits. There are ATMs all over the place in Amsterdam. I can think of several in Centraal Station alone. Where did you hear about bad Dutch ATMs, lindley?
NIGEL: Don't recall the subject or poster, but it was a comment made on the Travelers Helpline in regard to someone traveling to a-dam. It seemed like a rather abrupt statement to me, but thought I should check it out. Now, another unusual comment by another poster--actually an entertaining one! The subject was "all the museums in Amsterdam," and some of the far out ones. One of our more talented posters (writers) replied: "All those museums aren't so strange; the most unique one is the Museum of Weirdness, right there in Centraal Station.
Dense me, for a brief moment I thought maybe there really is a museum in the Station. Naaah...
