The number one thing that my father wants to see when we are in Munich is the old Neubiberg Air Base where he spent three years in World War II. I understand the base is now closed and serves as a military school. None-the-less, he still wants to go see that area. We will not have a car, but it looks like we can take a bus to Neubiberg, but then what? How do we get to the old base? Are there any markers/plaques designating the old area? thank you - Karen
I think I might have found what you are looking for. There is an airfield just west of the Neubiberg S-Bahn station and there is something there called the Universität der Bundeswehr. According to MVV, you get there by taking the U5 from Ostbahnhof to Neuperlach Süd, then bus 217 to Universität Bundeswehr Ost. It is a 0,2km (1/8 mi) walk from there.
The community of Neubiberg has email at [email protected]. You might write them for particulars.
That's it! We will be traveling there from the main station. Thank you!!!!!!!
Taking the U5 from Ostbahnhof was the schedule I got from MVV, but I see that the best way from the Hauptbahnhof would be the S6. The S6 and U5 share the station at Neuperlach Süd (as well as Ostbahnhof), but the S6 comes directly from the Hauptbahnhof.
Neuperlach Süd is in the inner zone (Innenraum). Your best ticket deal would be an Innenraum Partner-Tageskarte for €9. That would cover both of you for the entire day inside the inner zone, and would cover the bus as well as the S6.
With the hotel we are supposed to get a '3-day travel ticket for Munich's public transport network'. I think this would cover us! Thank you again for the helpful information. Karen
