Hello All,
I will be living in Berlin this summer for 6 weeks, Kreuzberg to be more specific. Anyway, I have this romanticized vision of a pre-war bar where the floor is black and white tile, the bar counter is marble, and the bartenders wear white oxfords and black bow ties and serve pilsner with finesse. Does this bar exist? Im a young academic who prefers quiet, low-key, traditional bars that tend to be filled with old locals. Have you been to this bar? Feedback appreciated.
Even though my time in the Kreuzberg district was limited, I did check it out pretty well and I never saw what you are looking for. This neighborhood is very young, trendy with a strong Turkish mix. Every bar or club I checked out was either techno, goth, punk, heavy metal,... No pilsner with finesse at these spots. The closest I can recall was a small bar named Sofie's Cafe on Wrangle str. (I think). But, not a bow tie in sight. When you get there and locate an upscale place like this, please share it with the rest of us. I'll be back in Berlin this winter (opera season!). Check out newberlinmagazine.com for a great listing of upscale nightspots. One place in Berlin you will love is E.& M. Leydicke on Mansteinstr. It's a 100+ year old schnapps bar with an older, more refined crowd.
