Oktoberfest Tips

I'll be at Oktoberfest in Munich for 3 days next week and I was wondering if anybody had any tips or suggestions. My accomodations are all set up at a hostel near the train station.

What time should I get there to get a seat in one of the beer tents? Is one beer tent better than another? Also, I it sounds ridiculous, but I was hoping to buy one of those traditional bavarian hats with a feather to wear during the festivities. Where can I get one of those?

Anyway, any tips or suggestions would be helpful!

Last year we went during the week and had few problems getting into any of the tents. One day we were in the Hofbrau tent and had a great time. The second day went roamed to a few other tents. We'll probably follow the same plan this year too.

It's not too hard to find those hats but I have no particular place to recommend.

As far as tips...

  1. Eat early and often. It'll be a short day for you if you don't keep your stomach 1/2 full with food.

  2. Don't wear anything you don't want beer spilled upon.

  3. Plan on becoming good friends with the people you sit next to. This year we're meeting the Danes we sat next to at last year's festitivies.

4.Plan on having a great time.

Prost!

My biggest piece of advice is to get there early - lunchtime would be perfect and then plan to spend the day there.

The hats are sold all around, so you can take your pick. The more authentic, the more expesive they get.

Have fun!

I like arriving at the tents late afternoon after eating a big mid-afternoon meal. By then you will see many people being (literally) carted off who forgot to eat. I like the Lowenbrau tent, but different people have different preferences. The whole place is awash in tourists and the Mecca for most tourists is the Hofbrauhaus tent so it's my least favorite.

The hats are a good souvenir. Similar to buying kilts in Scotland, the price for a good quality hat is approximately one arm and part of a leg. Since it is likely to get lost or soaked with beer, a cheaper version may work fine for your purposes. You can get a better price at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg than you will see in Munich.

For the neo-traditional look, wear one of the hats, a beer themed t-shirt, wide suspenders, cargo shorts and the tall traditional socks with either walking shoes or hiking boots. You can probably only pull off the look if your German has the heavy Bavarian accent (I liken it to our Southern accents). I saw numerous young men sporting that look but didn't attempt to copy, I just wore casual clothes.
