Oktoberfest - side trips

I'll be in Munich a day for the Oktoberfest. I would like to know if there's a side trip I can do as I do not want to spend my whole day drinking beer. Is it true that if we leave our seats from the tent, we may not be able to get back our seats. I was wondering if it's possible to book on that day itself and instead of spending the whole day at the tent, I would like to get out to explore any attractions nearby and come back in the evening for the Oktoberfest.

Is the Beer Garden / English Garden anywhere near the Oktoberfest? Can you recommend any nearby attractions? Is there anything else to do at the Oktoberfest besides drinking beer? This is my first trip at the Oktoberfest and Munich. I'm travelling from Salzburg. Is there a direct train from Salzburg to the Oktoberfest?

Thanks.

From Salzburg you'll arrive at the main Munich train station and then you take the U-bahn to the Theresienwiese stop (takes maybe 5 minutes). The tents are bunched together on one side of the park and there is a huge fair area opposite with lots of rides and other entertainment. The English Garden is on the other side of town - recommend going to the Marienplatz area where you can see the Rathaus, churches, shopping area, Hofbrau Haus, etc. Tent seats at the fest are at a premium - it can be just as fun wandering around.

Oktoberfest is about atmospherics as much as drinking. It will take an hour or 2 just to stroll the grounds-the Theresienwiese. There are 12 big tents, a midway, wine bars, food stands, and LOTS of people-watching.
Reserved seats are long gone. Each has some "open" seating, but I've never seen an empty seat. Tour as many tents as you can-all different, but seats will be easier to find on the outside decks.

One reason to go early in the evening- esp. on weekends- is that when a tent is full, they don't let anyone in, even just to look. Tour the site, tour the tents, then find a deck spot to drink and eat. A waitress will eventually find you, and you will be well cared for.

Plus, one of the best parts is, after you find a seat, locals will start interacting with you. Its always my favourite part of the whole fest.

Book your hotel NOW-today-if you haven't already. Try one of the Seibels. Prices are 150%-200% during the fest.

From Muenchen Hbf, take U-4 or U-5 to Theresienwiese.

Enjoy
