off season travel--March in the French Rivera, is everything closed?

We are traveling to France at the end of March. We plan to spend time around the French Rivera. I have been told the towns will be closed down for the season. I enjoy traveling off season, because the crowds are less, but I am concerned that many shops and restaurants will be closed. Is this true? Please let me know if I should revise our itinerary. Thank you. Debra

Hi Kent, I was leaving my question open, I did not to limit the answers or information I could receive from informed people like yourself. We are thinking of going to Antibes, Eze, Monaco. If Avignon, Arles and Aix-en- Provence is smarter for touring in March we could travel in that direction. Debra

Debra: You already have the right idea: March is not the best time to visit Provence, for a March trip stick with what you already said: Nice, Villefranche, Antibes, Eze-le-Village, St-Paul-de-Vence, Vence, etc. Eze-le-Village is really something, for somebody looking for a special experience. There are two Ezes, you want the one on the Middle Corniche, not the one on the coast. If you have a serious interest in Eze-le-Village, let me know, I was there a year ago and can provide details.

Debra: How to get to Eze-le-Village by public transportation (a bit of a challenge)--see this post how to get to Eze scroll down to the 2nd post. And then go here to read about a special experience you can have at Chateau Eza: Chateau EzaA good description of Villefranche-sur-Mer is in Rick's book Provence & the French Riviera, the chapter Between Nice & Monaco.

Thank you for the info. I ordered Rick's Provence and the French Riviera last week and haven't received it yet. I have the book on France, which is why we decided to go south after sightseeing in Paris and the Loire Valley area. I'm glad to know the book I ordered will help me with the details I am looking for. Thanks again Kent for sharing your knowledge. Debbie :)
