What do you mean by "dreck"? Cow poop? Or other tourists?

I wouldn't recommend truly hiking "off-piste" or you may encounter a very "piste-off" farmer. It's best to stay on the trails in Switzerland.

I you want somehwere way off the beaten path, you might look into dorm rooms at Hotel Fafleralp. up at the end of the Lötschental. but there may not be enough for your teens at a remote place like that.

For lots of different activities, like hiking, Trottibikes, paragliding, Grindelwald is good, but very full of tourists. You can avoid that by staying above town at one of the mountain hotels. I believe Berghaus Bort, partway up the First gondola, has family rooms and dorm room, and the location is great, with gorgeous views, and access to hiking trails above. You'll be stuck there in the evenings after the gondola stops running, however, unless you want to walk up.

Gimmelwald is nice too, and has a hostel as well as "sleep in straw" options. You'll encounter mostly Americans (particularly Rick Steves fans) there.

Christine (or is it nikki?), are you around? You started three different posts on this topic and then disappeared.

I think people responding to your questions would like to know if they have been helpful, or if you need more suggestions.

In Yiddish "dreck" literally means crap. . . as in manure. So maybe it is the cow poop she wants to avoid. Or maybe it's cheap souvenirs, which is a broader interpretation. But maybe she'll never come back and explain, or give any feedback, so we'll never know.

I've been lurking here for awhile and it seems like a "thanks" or at least acknowledging the help is the thing to do. She's gotten lots of suggestions on the other threads too.
