When exactly is Octoberfest, and where are the worst crowds ? We are planning to be in Germany the first 3 weeks in Oct and would like to avoid it. Is thae possible?
Looks like the whole shebang comes down on October 3rd! http://www.oktoberfest.de/en/article/About+the+Oktoberfest/About+the+Oktoberfest/Dates+and+General+FAQs/751/
Oktoberfest ends the first weekend (Sunday?) in October. But I think there is also something about Okt. 3, German reunification day. It can't end before Okt. 3, so if the first Sunday in October is the first or second, Oktoberfest runs until Monday or Tuesday. Anybody know more? I was there in 2007. I came into Munich on Thursday the 4th. The Hbf was a little crowded but not that bad. I walked down to Theresienwiese. It wasn't difficult, just followed the crowds. I returned to the Hbf and took a train to Oberammergau. Outside of Munich nothing was particularly crowded. On Friday I went to Linderhof. Again, no crowds. On Saturday I took the bus to Wieskirche, then on to Schongau. I took the train to Landsberg by way of Pasing. The train was filled with people in Ammersee Trachten, headed for the last Saturday night, but there was still space. I don't think outside of Munich , you will see much affect of Oktoberfest.
