What is the best way to obtain Euros in Spain?
We are staying in Peniscola for one week 6/l/08 and plan
to visit Batcelona and Valencia. Bring Debit Card from home,
bring Euros from US, Master Card, use Spanish Bank for
conversion?
Here is Rick's advice on that: Money 101
The best way to obtain euros in Spain would be to win the lottery. Short of that, use your ATM card. Check with your bank for the commission they will charge for your debit v. credit card, make sure you have a 4 digit, numerical PIN, and take the maximum amount available each time you withdraw. (This reduces the number of service charges.)
Don't worry about bringing money from the US.
In Barcelona you'll find plenty of ATM's to get cash, even at the airport. You'll see the "name brand banks" with their atms called Bancomats. I heard it called "Caja", but someone posted here that that's not really the term. Well, that word directed me to an ATM, so keep that work in mind :)
At restaurants or shops I used my Credit Union debit, but you can use your credit card. Double check w/ your C.C. on the conversion fees, etc if you're trying to see which company offers the best rate. I think Visa dings you more than M/C.
bring a few 100 euros from home, use ATM-card at ATMs of big banks only, use Credit Card for any large purchase (30euro+) for all esle. simple and easy.
Michelle, "Caja" is a Savings&Loan, as opposed to "Banco" which is a bank. A "cajero" (kah hay roh) is an ATM.
