I'm thinking about heading to Obertsdorf for some skiing next weekend. Anyone have lodging recommendations?
For four weeks in the early part of this decade, I stayed in Fischen, which is a couple of km from Oberstdorf, at Pension Bergheimat. The former operator, Alex Kees, had been a chef on a cruise ship, and he ran his pension the same way. One seating for dinner (6:30 as I remember), only one selection, although if you did not want "Zunge" he would fix you a Schnitzel, instead. He was also an outstanding cook. It's now, I think, under new management, and I don't know if the new operators have kept the old format.
I stayed at Hotel Rubihaus a couple years ago - very nice and close to the city center. There are dozens of good places to stay in the town. www.oberstdorf.de has a big listing with photos and prices.
Last January we stayed at the "Viktoria" in the suburb of Rubi. Ski bus stop is right outside the door but no nightlife and no access to the Oberstdorf Apres-Ski scene. The view of the Alpine panorama was stunning/breathtaking. Almost all the rooms have that kind of view. The hotel is 100% wheelchair accessible and handicapped friendly. They employ both physically as well as mentally challenged people. Food was OK but nothing too exciting. You can get good rates there via TUI.de and Expedia.de - among others.
Thanks for the suggestions, but I ended up staying in one of the few places where I could get a single room at short notice, a little place in Oberstdotf called Hotel garni Brigitte. I was completely worn out at the end of the day, so I could not have cared less about the apres ski scene. I remember Lee mentioning in another post awhile back that Oberstdorf is the most "German" of the Alpine resorts. Now I know what he means- I've met people from all over the world in Garmisch, Innsbruck, Murren and Chamonix, but I didn't hear a word of any language other than German in Oberstdorf.
