We are going to drive from Oberstaufen to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles probably going the speed limit if safe on the first Wednesday in September. How long does it usually take to get there? Do we need to make reservations ahead of time? Two of our family will need to take the buggy ride to and from the Neuschwanstein Castle. Can we see 2 castles, eat lunch, and still probably be able to drive to Garmisch-Partenkirchen by 6 pm that same day? Thanks for your reply!
It is only about 60km from Oberstaufen to Füssen. If you loop thru Austria (Reutte) to Garmisch, this too is only about 60km. You will have more time on your hands on this day than you think. After your schloss visit, go the longer way to Garmisch from Füssen, up the B17 to Steingaden, turn right to the Weiskirche, then continue over to the B23, turn right again to Oberammergau and follow the B23 all the way to Garmisch. Oberammergau is what it is, a quaint Bavarian town with pretty painted houses, that which you can see in any village. Skip it, stay on the bypass and continue to Ettal. This way is about 70km and would be ~4 hours with stops, and, of course, how many Benediktiner Weisse you toss back in Ettal.
