Can you simply get public transport from Munich to attend this and then return to Munich (again on public transport) after the play is over. If you can, then can anyone tell me where I can go online to buy just the tickets. We will already have an apartment for our week in Munich so rather not pay for another nights accomodation, apart from the fact that this seems a prohibitive way of doing it.
From what I understand (I could be wrong), you can only get tickets now as part of a package from tour companies... but if anyone knows different, hopefully they will chime in.
I was on the waiting list and purchased single tickets from Munchen Ticket in April. If you go to their website www.muenchenticket.de/, enter passionsspiele in the search box and you will see performance dates with ticket availability. The site is in german, but you can either e-mail or call them to speak with an english speaking representative. Good Luck!
"The site is in german"
If that is a problem, understand that the play is also in German. You're going to sit there all day in this hall and never understand anything. If you can't understand German, the book is available in English.
If you can find Play tickets, there is a train out of Munich every hour (at 32 min past), with a connection in Murnau (total time 1h49m). You can do the round trip with a Bayern-Ticket, available at any ticket automat for €20 for one person, €28 for 2-5 people, although you can only travel with the Bayern-Ticket after 9 AM on workdays. If you want to get to Oberammergau before 9 AM on a workday, the full fare ticket is €17,10 per person each way in 2nd class. For 2 people is would cost €34,20 down, €28 back.
We have tickets for May which we ordered directly through the ticket office but that was back in November. I believe the play is not over until 10pm
Here is an article from "The Local" about the opening of the Passion Play that you might be interested in reading.
