We are going to Oberammergau in August. We will not have a lot of time prior to the Passion Play. What do you recommend seeing while we are there for 1 day prior to the show? Linda.
There is an Oberammergau Museum across the street from the Passion Play Spielhaus, but you might be getting enough of that with the play.
Just walking around town can be nice, observing all the buildings with murals painted on them.
It's not very far (~25 min) by bus (RVO 9622) to Linderhof, one of Ludwig's palaces.
You can take another bus (9606) from Oberammergau in the direction of Füssen. If you don't want to go all of the way, most buses stop on the way at Wieskirche, a very ornate Roccoco church.
Or, you can take a that same bus (9606) the other direction to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The bus "station" is at the Bahnhof, across the river from the Spielhaus, on Bahnhofstraße.
see the Wiesskirche in Steingaden, the Kloster Ettal, or Linderhof if you want to experience the exuberance of Rococo architecture. Or drive down to Mittenwald if you want to enjoy small-town quaint picturesque Bavaria. Or just take a walk around Oberammergau and enjoy the frescoes on the walls and all the shops with wood carvings.
We spent a day in Oberammergau in 2008 and will be returning for the play this July. it is a beautiful
village with murals on many walls and my wife was
impressed with the shopping. If you want to leave town I would recommend a hike in nearby area or a visit to the monastery at Ettal, only a few miles away.
We had only 24 hours in Oberammergau...so we just walked around the village. Be dsure to see the murals on the city walls. They are beautiful. The play was incredible and all in German, but with the text in writing you can easliy follow along. The people are wonderful and the toursit office in Oberammergau is incredibly helpful!
