I have a morning to devote to either the Residenz or Nymphenburg. What do you suggest? I plan on spending the afternoon at Dachau.
I've been to both. To me the Residenz was tedious. Room after room of Baroque (or is it Rococo?) furnishings. I was glad when I escaped. Nymphenburg, OTOH, was a little more varied. The central palace building is smaller than the Residenz, That's good; takes less time to see. Although my entire 2500 sq ft house would fit in it's entry hall. Then you get to walk through the grounds. The other buildings are more varied. The Amelienburg was extremely gaudy, but the kitchen was a change, and interesting. What about the room where you come in, with all the cupboards with arched openings? What's that all about? I was disappointed that we couldn't see the inside of the indoor swim bad. If you are going to Dachau in the afternoon, Nymphenburg's on the same end of town and might be closer.
I would say Nymphemburg because it has more personality and the gardens are nice. Although the Residenz does have the treasury working for it.
My vote is also the Nymphenburg Palace. In addition to the previous comments, the Palace is also next door to the Munich Botanical Gardens which will greatly add to the outdoor experience! If you go to the teahouse on the Palace grounds, the Gardens are located roughly behind it.
I'm with Jonathan...just back last week. See Nymphenburg, walk the grounds, then head to the Botanical Gardens which abut the palace grounds. They have a nice cafeteria style restuarant with outdoor seating that made for a nice break. Several greenhouses and lovely plantings. Tram connections from city center are easy.
