Nurnburg or Heidelburg

We're finishing our auto trip and flying out of Frankfurt 5/1. On 4/29 we're staying in Rothenburg. My question is do we spend a night in Heidelburg, Nurnburg or a second night in Rothenburg?

Hmm. Wherever you stay the night of the 30th, you have to get to FRA the next day. I think I'd opt for Heidelberg because it is closer. Less chance of missing your flight.

Well, it really depends on your preferences. Nurnberg was flattened in the war and is rebuilt. The only "old" area is by the castle, which is interesting, but not exciting. The churches are rebuilt and so-so. There is a GREAT toy museum. Rothenburg is touristy but lots of fun, and when the tour buses leave it's just wonderful. My vote would be Rothenburg. BTW, I went to both two summers ago.

Heidelburg is so pretty in the spring. The view of the river from the castle is simply gorgeous. It does make sense to stay nearer to Frankfurt before your flight.

An interesting way to get to Heidelberg from Rothenburg would be to take a bus to Weikersheim, then the train to Osterburken and the VRN S-Bahn to Heidelsberg. In 2007 I paid €4,70 for the bus to Weikersheim, but if you only pay to Creglingen you might be able to buy a VRN Netz Einzelfahrschein (Network single trip ticket) on the bus for €8,30 pP. That should cover your travel all the way to Heidelberg.
