We will be travelling from Nuremburg to Rothenberg on Nov 2. It seems a challenge to go by train because of the numerous changes that are required. Anyone done it? How long does it take? Would it be cheaper to hire a car... or take a taxi... for the short distance? I'm looking for the easiest and fastest way between these cities, not necessarily the cheapest. Any help or advice would be appreciated!
The various changes (3) aren't that big a deal...looks worse on paper:) In fact the final train is simply a small shuttle train, that only goes about two miles to the old city. Even though Rothenberg is about 60 miles away it's still in the same regional transit zone, so when your purchase a ticket you will be sold a day/weekend pass which gives you unlimited transport within the zone including Nuremburg's U & S Bahns. Train is the best option....journey time is about 1 hour 15 minutes.
Come on. "a challenge to go by train because of the 'numerous' changes"? What about all of the signals you might encounter on the road, or the number of road changes. You have to change trains in Ansbach (or Neustadt) and again in Steinach. Big deal. I've never gone from Nürnberg to Rothenburg (I have gone from Ansbach to Rothenburg), but I've made scores of trips on German Rail where I made 2 or three train changes. People fly from Los Angeles to the east every day with a change in Dallas, and that is a MUCH bigger deal than changing trains in Ansbach.
I have gone Rothenburg to Nürnberg thrice, once on to Regensburg with another change. It is not a hard. As Nürnberg and Rothenburg are in the same local transportation network, it is also very economical; two of us did it for 14 euros.....It takes 1:15 - 1:45 minutes. It is a pleasant trip.
