Northern Spain & Portugal: Michelin atlas vs regional maps

Any experiences using both or either the Michelin atlas and/or individual regional maps for a driving trip in northern Spain and Portugal?

Jennie, just about any gas station will see you a bound "Guía Repsol" which is a comprehensive road atlas of Spain and Portugal. (Price is roughly €25.) This is what I keep in the car due to ease of use, quality and format. The problem is that it may be heavy for someone living out of a suitcase.

The same gas station will see Michelin maps (same quality, but in unbound, standard map format) if you're looking for a lighter option. This is what I use on bicycle trips. Both are good, the format is the only real difference.

I second the Michelin road map that can be found at the gas station. We used this as our overview planner, and to help determine our route. We left our road atlas at home......way too heavy....and unecessary.

The rest of the work is done by our GPS. I won't leave homw without it. It did great for a cross country US trip, and in Germany, Portugal, and a month ago, France.

Buy a GPS here that has the EU maps built in, learn how to use it here, and take it with you. You will never be sorry!
