We have 5 days for Northern Spain with a car. What is more worth our time, stopping in some cities on the Camino de Santiago, or exploring the Costa Verde? So far itinerary is: Day 1 - drive from Salamanca to Santiago de Compostela Day 2 - Open Day 3 - Open Day 4 - Open
Day 5 - End-up near Madrid Airport in the evening (flight home is next day) I'm interested in photography. Which route/stops will give me the best opportunities for photos? Thanks!
Costa Verde an area completely different from the other areas of Spain. Cantabria is lush and green, some say like Ireland even....Was there in the fall and stayed in Palacio Sonanes - check out the web site and stay at least a day and night there. For the main part, the mountains are green, the landscape beautiful. I would follow the coastal route all the way,and then turn to Madrid.
I'd compromise by hugging the coast from Ferrol to about as far a Gijon because of all the little villages and ports - - as well as the coastline itself. The compromise would be to cross the Santiago Trail (and spend the night) at Burgos on the way back to Madrid.
I walked the 790 km or 500 miles of the Camino last May and June, having a car will not really give you the experience of the Camino. However there are some beautiful cities to see in that area,Burgos, the Meseta (though not a town), Portomarin has the old city under water, Leon has some of Gaudi buildings, Ponferrada has a well preserved Templars castle. If you have any questions about the Camino feel free to send me a private message and I will be happy to answer.
