Northeastern coastal region of Spain

I am traveling to Spain for 10 days in May. We are flying into Madrid and out of Barcelona. We would like to spend a couple of days in the middle of the trip in a quaint coastal area that wouldn't be too far out of the way. Any suggestions for anything on the Costa Brava or Costa Dorada?
