We'll be driving from Normandy (Dieppe) to Nice after several weeks in Paris (so don't want to stop there). I'm hoping someone might have suggestions for a good stopover town about half way to break up the drive. I was thinking Dijon or Lyon, but only b/c they're larger. We'll have our 2 boys, 8 and 5 years with us, so that's a consideration. thanks.
Either one will break up that drive about half and half. Lyon is large enough so that you may want to avoid sleeping in the center to simplify driving to your lodging and parking, accommodations near the autoroute. For that reason Dijon might be better for you.
I'd recommend Beaune. Much easier than a larger city (Dijon or Lyon) for just an overnight, and quite a beautiful town. And you have the Burgundy wine country close by.
If you are going through Burgundy, and not staying long, I wonder if a small town might not be easier to slip in and out of and also enjoy. Cities take time to appreciate.
On that score Beaune is indeed better than Dijon, but I could also suggest two smaller towns: Vezeley (popular, though--a UNESCO World Heritgage site, but stunning) or tiny Noyers-sur-Serien.
