I am traveling from Brugge to Dinan along the French North coast (4 people traveling by car). I would like to break up the drive with a single overnight stay. Which town would you suggest? This will be in May. Thanks!
Rouen. Or pause in Rouen and go another hour to Honfleur if you want a really neat small town. The whole drive is not more than seven hours. Rouen is close to half-way, so you have a bunch ot time left over at the end of the day - - Rouen is a good place to burn some of it up. So is Amiens, but it's nowhere near the midpoint.
I am not sure which town would be best for you, but I am thinking that something right on the coast will be quite expensive since May is on the cusp of their busy season. You may want to go a couple miles inland. ;) Good luck! :)
A beach town would be fun. You could check out Honfeur & Deauville and then spend the night in Villers-sur-Mer (if you're on a budget, there's an almost new Ibis hotel there that's inexpensive). Next day check out the D-Day beaches, Bayeux, and Mont St. Michel en route to Dinan.
And if money is tight, a room at the Honfleur ETAP in May for two will set you back sixty bucks. It's about five hundred yards from the old port/city center.
There is an excellent B&B in La Cambe, about 20 miles west of Bayeux on the N13. The Place is called Le Lieu Besnard, and it is run by a wonderful English couple who refurbished an 18th century barn into a lovely home and B&B. My wife and I stayed there last spring, and had a great time. There are only two guest rooms, each with it's own full bath, priced (last spring) at 65 Euros a night, including an outstanding breakfast. You can find pictures of the place on (Dare I say it?) Tripadvisor.com. Just put Le Lieu Besnard in their search block, and you'll find a number of reviews and photos.
