Normandy-self-guided driving tour tips

Headed to Bayeux for several days in a few weeks and interested in American beaches and D-Day story. Will have a car and not inclined towards guided tours. Any suggestions for good self-guided driving tour books, tapes, etc. Thanks as always Mike DC

I'm not aware of any guides specific to the D-Day landing beaches. For many of those interested in visiting the Normandy debarquement areas, putting together a trip plan is half the fun. You could start by reading this: http://www.history.army.mil/brochures/normandy/nor-pam.htm I have a friend who authored a book focusing on military sites in Europe from a tourism perspective. It's out of print I think, but Amazon lists new (way too expensive) and used copies: http://www.amazon.com/March-Victory-Battles-Battlefields-London/dp/0870813277/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1300593398&sr=1-1 With just a few weeks to go, you'll be busy getting a plan together. OTOH, if you just visit the main landing beaches and towns, and drive through the areas immediately behind the beaches, you'll discover many really interesting little museums, sites, shops, and people that will make your trip a success. Have a great time!

Just FYI, April 15-17 there is a world Boy Scout Camporee happening in Normandy. It will be literally overrun with boyscouts/girlscouts from all over the world. On the upside, there's going to be reenactors, static displays, etc. in the area.

Major and Mrs Holt's series of books are fantastic! Just what you need; get the 'Normandy' one: http://www.amazon.com/Battlefield-Guide-Normandy-Landing-Beaches/dp/0850526620/ref=sr_1_8?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1300836881&sr=1-8 "Battle Map of the D-Day Normandy Landing Beaches" is included, so don't buy separately! Also, get a good driving map, like the Michelin Normandy 513 (also available from Amazon, Borders, etc.). DON'T get the "Battle of Normandy Map No 102" - it's a reprint of a 1947 map; for research only!

I'd include the appropriate Michelin Green Guide in my bag of tricks for any road trip in France.
