Hello - is it necessary to book a room ahead for Normandy? We're going in May, 2013. We typically go without reservations, but am thinking I need one for Normandy area. How far ahead should I book? Any suggestions of where to stay while in that area? Thanks
Personally, I would book end of Feb or early Mar for May. We stayed here in the Bajocasse Room and loved it. The young owners are very pleasant and attentive. Logis des Remparts - Bayeux

If you're not particular I think you'll be able to find a room somewhere without a reservation in May. I do highly recommend Hotel d'Argouges in the town of Bayeux. We've stayed there at least 6 times and love it. The owner, Mme Ropartz and her staff are really wonderful. The hotel is in the heart of town (a charming little town and a good base) but set back from the road down a driveway. It's like staying in a manor house, has lovely gardens, wonderful breakfast, parking, large rooms with comfortable beds and large bathrooms - all very clean. For Hotel d'Argouges, I would make a reservation, many people love it.
Pat, I'd recommend staying in Bayeux, especially if you're planning to visit any D-Day historic sites. Bayeux is a convenient location, many of the tours leave from there, you could also see the famous Tapesty and there's an excellent WW-II Musuem there. If you're planning to visit any of the beaches, you'll either have to use a rental car or take one of the excellent local tours (half day, full day and multi-day tours available). If you need a list of some of the tour firms, post another note. Happy travels!
thanks to all of you that answered me. It makes my planning so much easier when I can get input that I can rely on. The info. on the B&B and Hotel are great; I will be booking one of them. Thanks so much for your help.
