Normandy, one base or two?

I am planning a trip to Normandy, the Loire Valley and the Champagne region for March 2009. Normandy looks like a large area. Is it better to stay in one place as a base, or split it into two places? I was thinking Bayeaux for four days and then maybe somewhere else for a few days. Any suggustions?

A couple of things would be helpful to know:

How long will you be in Normandy?

Are you planning to rent a car?

What do you want to see?

I agree with Doug, a bit more information would certainly help.

Generally speaking, it's probably easier to use one base rather than having to pack everything and move to a new location. Your choice of Bayeux is a good idea. That's where I stayed and it was very convenenient.

Cheers!

Darla, I would stay in Bayeux. We loved it there and it is the most central for everything. There's a wonderful hotel there, which we've stayed at 3 times, it's in RS book...Hotel D'Argouges...e-mail: [email protected]
I can't say enough good things about this hotel. The owner is extremely nice, hotel is classy and beautiful, flowers everywhere, beautiful gardens, delicious breakfast, friendly, helpful staff, and free parking!

Hi Daria,
Here's a link to a site that may be of interest as a base from which to tour... copy and paste this into the address space ...

Hope your trip is everything you want ... and more!

I am also visiting Normandy, but will only have 1 1/2 days and no car. My friend and I would really like to visit some WWII sites (D-day beaches, etc.), but are unclear how to schedule this.

Honfleur was recommended to me as a charming town to stay in, but I am unclear about its proximity to WWII sites and the ease of getting there.

Any suggestions and/or thoughts would be much appreciated!

Thanks for all the replies. Here is some more information. I was planning on flying into Paris for two nights. (I have been here before)We would rent a car and drive to the Loire Valley area, maybe Amboise?(for 3 nights). Then drive to St. Micheal for one night. We would stay in Bayeaux for 4 nights. (I want to do the Band of brothers tour and the American two day tour by battlebus). I have checked out the hotel that Rick recommends and it looks nice. We would then drive to Ghent for three nights. (Do you think that is too far, should we stay somewhere else in the Normandy area?) We would then drive to Bastogne and do a tour there for two nights. We would then drive to Reims area for two nights and finish our trip back in Paris for another two nights. That makes 19-20 nights. Any ideas?
