We plan to take a train from Paris to Bayeux in Normandy. Is it possible to pick up a car in Bayeux, or is it easier to do that in nearby Caen? We plan to have the car for about a week and drop it off in the Burgundy area. Thanks.
If you plug in your info into the AutoEurope website, you will probably be able to get that information. You would need to rent from a large company, such as the ones AutoEurope deals with, in order to drop your car in a different location. Hertz overseas rentals may have that info for you, as well.
Caen is easier for several reasons. There are 3 rental agencies right across the street from the Caen RR station. We reserved our car from AutoEurope. The rental agencies are open at 8AM and stay open later daily and on Saturdays and are quite handy; not so with Bayeux. It's about 20 miles or less to Bayeux from Caen, an easy drive. We toured Normandy and Brittany for a week then returned the car at Caen and back to Paris.
Ray, I rented a Car in Bayeux a few years ago, and I'm assuming the rental agency is still there. The staff didn't speak much / any English, but fortunately the Hotel owner set everything up for me, so all I had to do was "sign on the dotted line". As the previous post suggested, check on-line to see what the options are in each town. Happy travels!
Hi Ray! I agree that taking the train and renting a car in Caen is easier. This works great especially if you plan to visit the WW11 museum in Caen which I recommend!
We took morning train from Paris to Caen, picked up car and then went to the museum and then drove to Bayeux where we stayed - no trouble picking up the car and when you drop off it's a very short walk to the train station.
