Is it possible to go to Normandy to see the battlefields and cemetery in a weekend from Munich? I will be in Munich on business and could leave on Friday evening. Is it possible or am I going to have to put this off to another time? Thanks,
Doug
There is a direct CNL night train from Munich to Paris, but it arrives in Paris at 10:00, way too late for you to get to Normandy for a tour that day. If you leave Munich at 16:28, you can get to Paris by 22:35 (one connection in Stuttgart). Spend the night in Paris and take a bus tour to Normandy that departs from Paris. If you fly, you'll pay dearly. There are no direct flights on budget airlines.
Douglas, It would be possible, but it would be a very rushed trip. If you could get away from your business commitments early on Friday afternoon, you could depart Munich at 14:26 and be in Paris at 20:54. Book a Hotel in Paris for two nights, but be sure to tell them you'll be a "late arrival". If you pre-book a tour for Saturday morning, it would allow you to have a very brief look at the beaches. I've never travelled with them, but you could have a look at: www.pariscityvision.com/en/france/normandy/d-day-beaches?Affiliate=7f100b0931 (You'll probably be inclined to "nap" on the Bus ride to Normandy). You'll get back to Paris late, so you probably won't feel like doing much touring. You could use an 11:25 departure from Paris Est and be back in Munich on Sunday night in time for supper. Happy travels!
Thank you very much! Your knowledge of getting around Europe is very impressive! Sounds like the trip is possible but won't be as much fun as I had hoped. Just too rushed. I really want to see the area but I also want to be sure I can see everything. Think I will hold off this time and plan to do this trip on another trip to Munich. This is my second trip to Munich in the last 6 Weeks and I am pretty confident I will be going back again. Doug
Douglas, For the most comprehensive and rewarding look at the history of the D-Day landings, the best method is to stay in Bayeux for a night or two, and take one of the excellent local tours (some of which take a full 9 hour day). There's also an excellent Museum in Bayeux, and a larger one in Caen which is a short ride away. The Guides are passionate about the history and extremely knowledgeable. They've taken many Veterans on tours, so can relate some unusual details that don't appear in any history books. If you need information on some of the best tours in that area, post another note. I've toured with a couple of them. Cheers!
Thank you, Ken! That sounds great! I am also a veteran with a passion for history and really want to do this right as I may only get one shot. If I could figure out a way I would change my return trip to originate in Paris and then spend 3 or 4 days in Bayeux so I can see as much as possible. If you have any additional information I would love to hear it! Thanks,
Doug
