Will be going for a day trip there from Paris. Any thoughts? Should we book a guided round trip bus trip from Paris or get to Caen on a train and pick up a tour there? Any suggestions on a good tour company for this?
What is the date you want to do this? The reason I ask is that it normally is a 2-hour train ride from Paris to Caen (and a little bit longer to Bayeux). However, starting in mid-July, major work will be done on the tracks. The ride will involve several connections and will take 3-5 hours.
kim, The guided day tours from Paris tend to be a bit expensive, but that's certainly one option. They tend to provide a quick overview of the main sights, but don't spend to long at any of them. You could pre-book one of the tours offered by the Museum in Caen. They offer several tours, including one which picks up visitors at the train station. Their website is www.memorial-caen.fr/portailgb/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=809&Itemid=1032 If you had more time, the best solution would be to spend at least one night in Bayeux, and take one of the excellent all-day tours (some half-day tours are also available). Happy travels!
I was in Normandy last June and used the Overlord Tour group - very, very pleased with them. I'd echo the comment about traveling to Bayeux via train (and staying there). Of note - the Normandy tour groups are small and book up quickly. I'd suggest having an advance reservation.
