I really need some help with this part of our visit to France. We would like to spend 4 nights in Normandy and possible visit, Mont. St. Michel, Bayeux, Rouen, Honfleur and, of course, the American cemetary and beaches. Should we rent a car or just book a tour for part of the trip? We are taking a train from Paris to Normandy.
For what you have proposed, rent a car. December weather can be iffy- not bone chillingly cold usually, but lots of rain, fog and short days. Winter is not a great time to explore rural areas in NW Europe. You need to keep a flexible schedule and be less ambitious with an itinerary than you would in the summer. My gut feeling is that in December, 4 nights is not going to be enough to see all you have proposed.
I suggest you take a Battle Bus tour of the area. We took an all day tour and loved it.
I also recommend the Battlebus tours. I took the two day experience tour and the Band of Brother tour. I can't say enough good comments on our tour guide. I stayed in Bayeux 4 nights and Mont St. Michael one and one night in Honfleur. I think 4 nights is not enough to see them all.
