Going to France with granddaughter (13), arriving day before Bastille, debating about Paris with her doing that time, can you suggest any lovely Normandy villages other than Honfleur and Caen, that are easy to bike around, not that into WW11 trip memorial trip this time out?
Beb:
I was in Paris with the kids (ages 13 & 8) on Bastille Day 2004. What fun!
We watched the fireworks from the Champs du Mars (near the Eiffel Tower). Unforgettable.
In Normandy - Bayeux is wonderful and the kids still talk about the museum with the tapestry. Have fun.
Traffic in Bayeux can get a bit rough for biking, but it's a neat place.
Maybe Trouville-sur-Mer (about ten miles west of Honfleur) which is much like Honfleur in size, and just as nice in some ways -- it's an old fishing port.
Or perhaps Avaranches (about ten or twelve miles west of Le Mont St Michel). Bigger than Honfleur, but not as busy as Bayeux. Has a nice botanical garden and an excellent estuary park.
About where one gets bikes, I have no idea.
I think any kid that has the opportunity to see Bastille Day in Paris with the fireworks and all would want to see it. This is one of the best parties around, and I am not talking about the drinking kind. It truly is a wonderful sight and I think your granddaughter will like it.
Thank you all for your kind suggestions and shared experiences. I have been on the net all evening, and well into the night, researching apartments in Paris, and may have found one we can afford. I have no doubt we would both love the festivities of Bastille plus a few more days, just monitoring our exhaustion levels prior to arriving, likely mine more than a curious and adventuresome 13 year old. But why not?
Cordialement, beb
