Can anyone suggest a good Non Smoky hotel in Madrid?
Smoking is banned in all hotels in Spain. In addition, they just instituted a ban on smoking in bars and restaurants, near hospitals, and on children's playgrounds.
In all my travels, I've only stayed at one hotel that someone obviously had previously smoked in. It was obvious they had smoked against regulations, as you don't even find ash trays in hotels.
We are going to Spain for the first time this May. But Europe seems to be banning smoking in all hotels, at least in Italy there is a fine imposed on the owner of the hotel if there is any smoking in the room. In many places it was posted on the door, along with the room rate.
Oh, I've stayed in many hotel rooms in Europe that really stunk terribly of cigarettes (which I detest). While things are definitely getting a lot better in many parts of Europe, you may still find yourself in a smelly, sore-throat-inducing hotel/room sometime (despite claims of non-smoking rooms). I ran into this just a few weeks ago - at one of the government-run hotels at Plitvice National Park in Croatia - although there were many, impossible-to-miss NO SMOKING signs throughout the hotel, the entire wing of the building completely reeked (enough to make my throat start hurting immediately). I immediately went throughout the wing and opened up every window in hallways and common areas (despite the cold temperatures). It helped air things out a little. I figure you do the best you can and take your chances. In some places, you may or may not have options, and ultimately you may have to put up with it occasionally.
We check the pillows and sheets upon entering the hotel room. If there is any odour we call the front desk and have our room changed before we unpack one item. There are No Smoking signs everywhere but some people seem to feel that it is their right to smoke.
I've been at the Hotel Europa since Thursday and I have not encountered any smoke inside the building. It' a nice hotel in a great location.
