I am tyring to find any 3 star hotel or hotel chains in Madrid and Barcelona that are non-smoking. I have seen hotels with non-smoking rooms yet most say that you cannot be guaranteed a non-smoking room until checking in. I need to reserve a room with 2 single beds or a king bed. Also would like to have air condition and close to a metro station. Any suggestions would be great.
You are being very restrictive in your choices. The non-smoking movement is gaining grounds in Europe but it still lags the US. We have always been able to obtain non-smoking rooms in recent years. Have yet to see (at the three star level and below) a totally non-smoking facility. Might exist at the four and five star but no experience at that level. A king bed probably is out but the two single beds is very common. It should be shown on the booking site for the hotel. A double bed room is often referred to as a matrimony room.
Over the years we have stay frequently at Hotel Europa in Madrid which has a great location.
I've stayed in a lot of European hotels running the range from dirt cheap to luxury. Only once can I remember staying in a room that had obviously been formerly occupied by a smoker. A 3 star hotel will accommodate your non-smoking request if you book in advance.
I have been to Spain three times in the past five years, a total of about seven weeks all together. I generally stay in smaller hotels, 3 star and below. In that time, I have only encountered one smoking room in a hotel. When I complained about the smell, they instantly switched me to another room. I don't think it's a problem.
