Does anyone know if you can still sleep in straw in Gimmelwald. I believe it was at Esther's B&B barn but it is not advertised anymore as an option. Just wanted to know if anyone was more up-to-date on this than I.
They were still advertising it a few months ago.
Well, darn, it's not there now. It was associated with a hotel and I noticed one of the hotels has closed.
It was definitely associated with Esthers guesthouse - http://www.esthersguesthouse.ch/ . The site still has remnants of the business (Title Tag), but does not specifically mention it as a current option.
I guess you could email them direct and ask :)
...or just call
The sleeping in straw is seasonal, only available when the cows head for higher ground in the summer. So, you might check into it and see when the season will begin.
Just know, it is an actual working barn and smells like it too, even when the animals are gone. We were there in late September and it was still used for sleeping. However, we didn't stay there. Esther speaks good English so you might call her. We bought quite a bit of food from her while we were there...fresh milk, straight from the cow..still warm in fact..quite an experience!
I emailed Esthers about this about 1-1/2 months ago. They replied that there will be someone new handling the sleeping in straw portion, and therefore, it could not be booked yet. I ended up just booking a room with her at the B&B instead. I got the impression there still will be sleeping in straw offered, just not through that family/owner, however I'm not sure.
If anyone finds out if it is still available, please let us all know. Thanks.
Okay sorry I dont' get it...why do we want to sleep in the straw? Is it a straw bed?
Bed? Too funny. It's a working barn and smells like it. With the cows in high pasture during the summer, you can sleep in the straw over the barn. No bed, just straw. But, it's really cheap.
There's a network of barns used for visitor accommodation in the months when the cows are at the high pastures (alps). Information can be found at http://www.abenteuer-stroh.ch/en/default.asp - it's not only in Gimmelwald.
