Is the tour offered by only one person/company or is this a generic term for a tour offered by many companies? If so, which one would you recommend?

As of 2004 when I went on this tour, I understand it was one enterprising and entertaining young man. This may have changed in the intervening four years. If he's still doing it, I recommend it.

The nightwatchman has his own website, www.nightwatchman.de. It starts in German, but there is a link, bottom right for English.

Hi,
We did the Nightwatchman's tour last October (2007). We thought it was great fun and one of the highlights of our Rothenburg visit.
Just be at the main square at 8pm. He collects the fee at the end of the tour. It's 6 Euro per adult.

This tour is awesome! It is one man that runs this every night. It is definately not a tour company and is not offered by anyone else. He is so entertaining and definately worth more than the price of admission. His girlfriend (or fiance??) has her own little shop in town too and sells some of his video and such. Her shop is really cool too, I got the greatest earrings there. It was a highlight to my visit in Rothenburg.

One man does two tours nightly. First in English then in German. We all enjoyed it.
Unlike Edinburgh, where many tours start from the Merkt Square, just find the town square. If you see a group forming up, it will be the right group.

You should go on the tour if you can. Not only is he very funny, but informative too.
