We will be picking up our daughter at the Munich airport late in the day and then need to head south to Bolzano the next day. This will be during Oktoberfest so we cannot stay in Munich, but we don't want to travel too far as she will be tired after the long overseas flight. (we will have been in Europe a week at that point). Looking at the train stops on the train between Munich and Bolzano, I see the train stops in Rosenheim, Kufstein, wörgl, and Jensbach before Innsbruck. Kufstein is about an hour from the main Munich station and looks charming in the photos. Can anyone give me any fed back on this place? We won't be there long, but we do like to walk around in the evening. Or is there a better choice that we could reach from Munich airport without first going in to the Munich Hauptbahnhof? And then connect with that southbound train to Bolzano the next morning? We would like someplace with charm, not a faceless airport hotel. Thanks!
We were in Kufstein a few years back on a day trip from Munich. Primary purpose was to visit the Riedel Glassware factory where they still do handblown wine glasses. The old town has a beautiful district with some very nice hotels. In fact I made a note we should do an overnight here some day. Here is the place I was thinking of. http://www.auracher-loechl.at/
You can take the S8 from the airport to the Ostbahnhof and change to Kufstein there and bypass the Hauptbahnhof.
I haven't looked for many years, but I once was looking at the area around Kufstein, and I found that Kiefersfelden, just inside the border on the German side, had more places to stay. But that might not still be true. An advantage for Kufstein, which is just over the border in Austria, is that it is a border station for the Bayern-Ticket, so you can buy a Bayern-Ticket at the airport and use it all the way to Kufstein. The next morning, you will be in Austria, so you could use an Austrian/Italy rail pass to Bolzano the next day. If it matters. Take the S8 to Muenchen-Ost. From there catch an RE going to Salzburg, get off in Rosenheim, and catch a train to Kufstein. Or, there are ECs from Muenchen-Ost directly to Kufstein, but you can't take the EC with a Bayern-Ticket.
Thanks, everyone. Sounds like Kufstein is the right choice. Sam, I am looking at that same hotel and it looks charming and easy to reach from the train station. And Lee, thank you for mentioning the Bayern ticket. That should work for getting us from the airport to Kufstein via the Munich Hauptahngof. We will not have railpasses but I can buy the Kufstein to Bolzano ticket online on bahn.de for the direct train that originates in Munich. It stops in Kufstein at 10:31 which should be fine. Price I see for advance purchase is 19€ which sounds good to me. I am glad I asked as Kufsteinis appears a much better option than Rosenheim, where the direct train also stops.
Yes, I remember asking at the front desk if there was an internet cafe in town as we had an hour to kill and check our email. The girl at the desk just said "Here, use our loaner and logon to our wi-fi." and she handed me a laptop!
