Nice to Avignon

We are cruising around France and ending in Nice and want to explore the Provencial countryside. We are thinking of renting a car and getting to Rousillon using it as a base for two nights to explore the wine area some and Avignon. Any suggestions/warnings/ideas? We know it is about 4 hours to Rousillon from Nice and we know we don't have enough time for Provence totally, but any help is appreciated. Thanks!!!

You'll want a rental car. Public transit is very limited. There's lots to explore where you want to go and it's much easier with a rental car. You might train to Avignon and pick up your car there.
